Because The World Needs Another Opinion (It’s The Only One I Have To Give)











I started writing a really long and almost essay-like post about the Scottish Independence debate. But - realistically - no-one is going to read or care about it (in any defining sense anyway).

All I’ll say is it has been fun to see how divisive the issues have been if my Facebook feed is anything to go by (and that really is a sad indicator of how this debate has been over-exposed).

Largely the ‘No’ side seems driven by logical, business and sometimes class-based arguments - all about businesses moving out of Scotland, the economy suffering more; whereas the 'Yes’ side seems much more driven by their heart and desire for a truly independent Scotland, which effectively resurrects at least a metaphorical Hadrian’s Wall in terms of where the buck stops.

Power to the people is my instinct - remember that this is a unique opportunity to get closer to running your own country. That’s something I doubt I’ll see in my lifetime - sure I get a single vote every 5 years, but until I’m allowed to dictate which public sectors get my tax money; I have no real influence on how the geographic location I live in is run.

Fortunately, compared to the majority of the world; my life is privileged enough that the most disruptive thing I have to concern myself with is errant traffic laws; bureaucracy of the British-est order; and blithering idiots from all sides of the political spectrum that - fortunately - hold no real sway on my life’s fruition.

But if you gave me the opportunity to establish my own country with like-minded individuals, in broadly the same geographic location - amongst (lets face it) a broadly-friendly surrounding cluster of nations; I would snap your hand off and go for it.

Yes, things will change - but that is the fundamental law of the universe - everything is in constant change; and our greatest challenge is to cope with those changes, and make our shared world-experience for the better.

If you really don’t like the idea of Scotland become independent from Westminster rule, then - quite simply - move South of the border and come and see how god-awfully dull that life really is.

  I'm trying to get this out of my head whilst the sensation is still fresh. Genuinely - what was the point of all that? What was the point of Christmas? I have no doubt that folks reading this have their own interpretations of what Christmas is - be it a religious observation; a familial event; a cultural bonanza; a shopping spree; an excuse to spend time with people you love. The latter absolutely used to be the case for me; and certainly on some levels was still the case for me for Christmas 2023. But I still find myself questioning what was the point; and why did I feel obliged to participate in a cultural juggernaut, when it's origins are so muddled in recent times? - It strikes me that the most prevalent version of Christmas ( in the UK at least ) is the commercialised one. Maybe not even figure-headed by Santa now - it's a pure economy-driving emblem, especially since Covid began - and without joining the choir of purists, I can't recall the last mention of Jesus

Another UK General Election, another overwhelming feeling of being let down by the democratic process. Let me get this clear from the start - this is a non-partisan review of the 2015 UK General Election , and why the definition of democracy in Britain continues to bewilder me. According to the BBC News page linked above, the electorate [I.E. those eligible to vote] totals 46 million {okay technically 46,425,386, but I’m going to round to the nearest half-million for the purposes of this blog}. The Conservative Party gained 11.5m votes - that is exactly a quarter of the electorate. And yet, Friday afternoon, David Cameron had a chat with the Queen and subsequently formed a Majority Government. And that’s not just a name - the Conservatives hold just over half the seats in the houses of Parliament (331). I've Fallen In Love With A Hippopotamus

  I actually can't find a record of holiday I took on my own that wasn't a Magic extended weekend (Copenhagen and Stockholm) or a drive down to Nantes in 2019. And whilst I have done a multi-country trip in Europe (thank you 2017), that was in the excellent company of one Areckahn; so I am not sure that I have ever strictly done a holiday on my own?
