Theory of Epicality











Formulated in the dying hours of Friday 17th July, 2009 – the Theory of Epicality was specifically inspired by listening to Metal, walking home from work in the blistering rain {6.2 on the Epic Scale}; and generally inspired by the abundance of references to epicness on the new crucible of definition; the interwebs.

General Theory of Epicality

Anything, be it perceived to be bad/good or have a positive/negative effect; can be rated on the Epic Scale.

The Epic Scale

Conventional use of the Epic Scale operates between 0 and 11. Although exceptions have been recorded, at times of extreme epicness.

< 1 Micro - Barely noticeable instance of epicness. Only noticed by trained epicticians.

1-2.9 Minor - Epic occurance that is taken in the individual’s stride.

3-4.9 Light - A glimpse of epicness that is visible to the people around you.

5-6.9 Moderate - Moments of epicness occurring within the context of every day life.

7-8.9 Strong - Prolonged period of epicness in familiar surroundings.

9-9.9 Major - Out of the ordinary scenario of epicness.

10-10.9 Great - Statistically unlikely occurrence of epic significance.

11+ Epicly Epic - Unlimiting and unique moment of pure epic.

Up until a few weeks ago, I really could not care less about the election. For me – national politics was a joke that I didn’t find particularly amusing, or particularly offensive; it operated outside of my social circles, my circus of ideas; it was something for other people to be interested in. What's The Point of Christmas?

  I'm trying to get this out of my head whilst the sensation is still fresh. Genuinely - what was the point of all that? What was the point of Christmas? I have no doubt that folks reading this have their own interpretations of what Christmas is - be it a religious observation; a familial event; a cultural bonanza; a shopping spree; an excuse to spend time with people you love. The latter absolutely used to be the case for me; and certainly on some levels was still the case for me for Christmas 2023. But I still find myself questioning what was the point; and why did I feel obliged to participate in a cultural juggernaut, when it's origins are so muddled in recent times? - It strikes me that the most prevalent version of Christmas ( in the UK at least ) is the commercialised one. Maybe not even figure-headed by Santa now - it's a pure economy-driving emblem, especially since Covid began - and without joining the choir of purists, I can't recall the last mention of Jesus...

Now We Are Free

  About 23 years ago, I started to make some fairly fundamental decisions about my life. I'm referring to internal, philosophical and - ultimately (pun intended) - selfish decisions, that would steer my way of approaching life for the next few decades. Perhaps the term selfish is misleading, as I think it has a negative feel to it (which, may well still be true in some lights); but what I mean by the previous sentence, is that I looked at the world outwardly from myself.
